Chloe’s legs felt like wooden boards. Stiff, rough, and unbendable. She was so sore that when she tried to stand, she had to give up and flop back down on the bed. There was literally no part of her body that didn’t feel achy and exhausted.
Just half an hour more, she told herself, curling up painfully and going back to sleep.
A rhythmic ping woke her just in time for morning session, a ting, ting, ting that vibrated the windowpane. With a stir of relief, Chloe realized it was rain. She rubbed her legs again and heard Val and Makena start to stir.
“Dude.” That was enough to know that Val’s legs felt as heavy as Chloe’s.
“I’m scared to move,” Makena said in a low voice. “My legs feel like someone is sitting on them.”
“At least it’s raining. Lars can’t torture us anymore,” Chloe said, pointing toward the window.
“That’s what you think,” Val said. “Rain just means we play in the gym.”
“Hey, weren’t you supposed to meet Flavia this morning?” Makena asked.
“Oh, right. I guess I fell back asleep,” Chloe said. “But, I mean, it’s raining. She probably didn’t bother coming, right?”
Chloe swung her legs around and stood up. Not even a month of ballet training could test her muscles like those horrid sprints. She wondered how the rest of the camp was faring and then winced at the thought of them cursing her name as they tried to get out of bed. If they were as dog-tired as she was, maybe they wouldn’t have the energy to hate her.
The three girls limped to breakfast, impressed again by how spotless the cafeteria was. They grabbed some fruit (and milk for Val) and then scurried to the gym to avoid getting soaked. The summer rain was pouring down in sheets.
There was no shortage of cones this morning, Chloe saw. Plastic circles of orange, neon-yellow, pink, red, and blue dotted the gym floor like confetti.
The rest of the campers straggled in.
“Alrighty then,” Lars said, kicking off the session. “Today is a new day. A wet new day, but that’s just a good chance to wash away the disappointments of yesterday and move on to the opportunities of the future!”
Chloe yawned in spite of herself.
“Today we will work on our ball skills,” Lars continued. “Without them, soccer is just a game of kickball with goals. Please see Flavia for your group assignment for this session.”
Chloe, Makena, and Val walked over to Flavia, who was immediately surrounded. Campers jockeyed to get close to her and find out their groups. Chloe couldn’t imagine what all the fuss was about. It was just a morning session. Who cared?
She hung back, waiting for all the pushing to stop.
“I can’t believe Lars is picking the team today. I hate playing in the gym,” she overheard a girl near her say. “The floor is too hard. And the lighting is just so harsh. It’s really not fair.”
So that’s why everyone was so tense, she realized. Lars was making the roster for the inter-camp game.
